1. Hanse Sail from July 22nd to 28th, 1991
The idea for Hanse Sail came from Wolfgang Schierenbeck, a merchant from Bremen; his model was Sail Bremerhaven '90.
The organizing committee began its work in October 1990.
- 10 nations and approximately 400 traditional sailing ships and visiting yachts (Captain Miranda from Uruguay), first tall ship from overseas.
- 14 large ships in a parade 8 km long, each spaced 300 m apart.
- 1.2 million visitors.
- Reporting by 120 accredited journalists from 9 countries.
- International coverage includes the NEW YORK TIMES and press in India and South America.
- Evening concert with orchestras from France, Sweden, Ireland and Germany in the city center.
- The world's longest beer bar at the music circus made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
- Welcome by Dr. Klaus Kilimann, Mayor, who stood 100% behind the event and answered the question of whether the city would also bear the risk with the words "Well, who else would?"
- The patron was Federal Environment Minister Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer.
- The organizing office of HANSE SAIL ROSTOCK moved into the Ständehaus in December 1990.
